The holidays are a great time to get together with friends and family, to share stories, eat feasts and create memories. It is estimated that 55 million people are going to travel this holiday season. When you go by car it is important to plan ahead and prepare for the unexpected. Here are a few tips to consider:
Vehicle Maintenance:
Check your vehicle for proper maintenance conditions. Tires, lights, oil, brake fluid, and windshield washer fluid are great places to start. Depending on the age of your vehicle other items may need to be checked. Although it may not prevent a breakdown, proper maintenance can reduce the risk of one.
Stay Alert:
Plan your trips when you are alert and fresh. Try to avoid driving when you are tired. Drowsy drivers cause many avoidable accidents and it is better to stop and rest than keep driving.
Route Preparation:
Use a map service to review the route you are taking and consider the added traffic for the holiday. There may be delays or construction that you need to anticipate.
Defensive Driving:
Let impatient and aggressive drivers pass you. Don’t get caught up with them. You will all make it to your destinations in good time but if you are aggressive it can lead to avoidable accidents.
Traveling with Children:
When traveling with children plan ahead. Map out bathroom breaks and take snacks and activities for them. When they are unruly don’t get distracted and stay focused on the road.
We hope everyone has a fun holiday and that you all make it to your destinations safely.
